Healthy Housing

Healthy Housing logoRecognizing the need for housing solutions that help Golden achieve its vision as an inclusive, welcoming city, Golden is working on creating attainable, healthy, and safe housing options for the community.

Healthy Housing Initiative

Golden is proud to have been a part of the Community of Practice for Healthy Housing Equity, led by the National League of Cities (NLC), to develop community-wide approaches that support healthy housing in our community. Golden joined five other cities, towns, and villages from across the nation to do intensive work on healthy housing and health equity.

Through this effort, the City hopes to bring a stronger focus to its existing housing stock with a focus on preserving existing housing in Golden, while addressing inequities and improving the quality of life for our residents.

Golden's Healthy Housing Community Vision: All residents have a home that's free of health and safety hazards.

Action Strategies for Healthy Housing
  1. Complete inventory of lead service lines to homes, as the foundation for a lead service line replacement initiative.
  2. Implement city-wide education programs related to indoor healthy and safety hazards.
  3. Establish a rental registry to assist in identifying housing health hazards.
The Golden Healthy Housing team brings together various city leaders and departments—City Council, Public Works, Community Development, Housing, and Sustainability. Their aim is to pool resources from these areas to find ways to enhance the well-being of our current residents by improving the quality of their housing.

Lead Service Line Inventory Project
As part of our commitment to Healthy Housing, Golden launched a Lead Service Line Inventory Project in January 2024. Homes built before 1940 are at the highest risk of containing a lead or galvanized line. The City is actively inspecting and inventorying service lines in homes built before 1940. If lead or qualifying galvanized material is found, residents may be eligible for a free service line replacement.

Rental Registry
The city conducted an initial round of public engagement in the Spring of 2024 to gather feedback around the idea of implementing a voluntary rental registry program in Golden. Staff is compiling a summary of the input to determine next steps.
